Welling United Match Preview
Bath City will be determined to return to winning ways when they welcome regular visitors Welling United to Twerton Park on Saturday.
A run of defeats and the postponement of last Saturday’s trip to Ebbsfleet has resulted in the club slipping into the lower reaches of the league table and yet again they face an in-form team, albeit one which had a disastrous start to the season.
After seven matches the Wings had accumulated just four points and following a disastrous defeat by Harrow Borough in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup it was no surprise when they parted company with manager Steve Lovell.
His replacement will undoubtedly be the most famous face at Saturday’s match. Peter Taylor made over 100 appearances for both Crystal Palace and Spurs in the 1980s as well as winning four caps with England.
Following his retirement from playing he has managed a host of clubs including Premier League Leicester City. But he really made his mark as manager of the England under 21 team in two spells as well as leading the senior team for one match as caretaker boss. This was the occasion when David Beckham was made captain for the first time.
The new appointment at Park View Road has seen an upturn in the Kent club’s fortunes with ten points won from the last five matches, the latest a 1-0 win over Billericay last Saturday. This places them in 12th position with 14 points, five more than City but having played two matches more.
Having lost their first three away matches, with no goals scored and eleven conceded, Welling have recently won at Chippenham and returned with a point from Hemel Hempstead.
The Wings made the first of their twenty league visits to Twerton in 1986 and the City’s record in the sequence is nine wins, six draws and five defeats. While honours are therefore fairly even, we were victorious in five of the six encounters from 2004. However, in their last two appearances here Welling have returned home with four points.
This is the first of three home games for City out of the next four which provides an ideal opportunity to kickstart the season. You can buy your ticket in advance from the Club’s website.
