Wanjau-Smith shines for five-star City

Substitute Sol Wanjau-Smith produced a great individual display this evening, with two goals and two assists, to fire City to a 5-0 win over Frome Town at Badgers Hill in their penultimate pre-season friendly.

Played in stiflingly hot conditions the first half saw City begin brightly before the home side began to get the upper hand. So, it was slightly against the run of play on 19 minutes when Ewan Clark’s great run and shot got a slight touch off Scott Wilson to give City the lead. The Robins came close to levelling five minutes before the break when the impressive Day saw his free-kick crash against the post with Harvey Wiles-Richards well beaten.

Frome enjoyed the better of the second half’s early exchanges as Day shot into the side netting and several other good moves stretched City’s backline. However, a serious looking injury to Rusher on 55 minutes understandably halted their momentum. City made a number of changes when play resumed and within two minutes had the ball in the net, only for an offside flag to rule out Alex Fisher’s follow-up finish after Phillips parried Humphrey-Ewers’ initial shot. Within another two minutes City did double their lead as Wanjau-Smith broke through the middle before rolling the ball past Phillips. Wiles-Richards produced a great finger tip save to keep out Day’s shot on 74 minutes but three minutes later Clark crossed for Wanjau-Smith to head home City’s third goal. The summer signing from Maidstone United then set up two further goals for the Romans, crossing for Zac Smith to slide home number four in the 80th minute and giving Jordan Alves a simple tap-in five minutes later to complete the 5-0 win.
