Wanjau-Smith on target to secure Truro win
A Sol Wanjau-Smith goal four minutes before half-time was enough to secure victory over Truro City at Twerton Park this evening. He showed great strength and determination to hold off a defender before lifting a shot past Lavercombe to send the Tinners back to Cornwall empty-handed.
City enjoyed the better of the early exchanges. Billy Phillips’ cross-shot just evaded Ewan Clark sliding in at the back post then Lavercombe turned Elliott Frear’s cross over the bar. City also had two strong penalty shouts when Wanjau-Smith was blocked off the ball by a defender just inside the box. Their frustration was heightened when a similar incident outside the area saw the referee award a free-kick This bright start faded though as Truro began to impose themselves on the game. Just past the hour mark a great goalline block by Jack Batten denied Harvey. So, it was slightly against the run of play when Wanjau-Smith put City in front four minutes before the interval.
Three minutes after the restart Phillip’s shot from a Jordan Tillson cross was turned over the bar by Lavercombe. Another penalty appeal was waved away on 50 minutes when Clark clearly had his shirt pulled in the box, Harrison bravely blocking a follow-up shot, as City continued to press for a second goal. Another chance fell to Harvey in the 57th minute but Harvey Wiles-Richards smothered the close-range shot on the line. Truro were beginning to look a greater attacking threat and with 16 minutes left former City-striker Harvey raced clear only to be denied by a great stop by Wiles-Richards. Ten minutes later he produced any even better save when Johnson-Fisher’s cross found its way to Riley-Lowe at the far post only for another former Roman to see his shot from a couple of yards out blocked by the keeper. This was the final real scare for City as they saw out the remaining time to secure a third 1-0 home victory of this fledgling season.
