Unbeaten Stones roll on with City win
Maidstone United maintained their unbeaten start to the 21-22 season with a 3-0 victory over City at Twerton Park this afternoon. Understandably the visitors started the game confidently and took the lead on 15 minutes. Debutant keeper Maurice Mahoney did well to keep out an initial effort but the ball dropped kindly for Curran to side foot it home from eight yards. This woke City up and Mo Touray was desperately unlucky four minutes later when his curling shot hit the post with keeper Hadler well beaten. They continued to enjoy the better of the game after this but long range efforts from Alex Fletcher and Tom Smith were easily dealt with by Hadler. The second half began with Elokobi almost slicing an attempted clearance into his own net but on 53 minutes the Stones dealt City a hammer blow with a breakaway second goal, Luque steering home a Corne cross. City continued to push but even with the introduction of top scorer Cody Cooke from the bench they found Maidstone’s defence in resolute form. And the Stones ensured the points would be heading back to Kent in the 78th minute as Luque evaded several challenges on the edge of the box before finding the corner of the net with a well-placed low shot.
