Ruthless City show no mercy in big Cup win
City produced a five-star display at a wet Twerton Park this afternoon to sweep aside Frome Town and secure a place in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round. The Robins had already beaten Vanarama National League South opposition in the previous round but rarely troubled City in a one-sided clash. Tom Smith and Alex Fletcher had already missed good chances before the latter headed home from Elliott Frear’s 16th minute cross. The visitors did spurn two great chances to get back in the game after this, Murphy Mahoney saving well from ex-City forward Jon Davies on 23 minutes, then ten minutes later another former Roman, George Rigg, should have levelled when sent clear on goal only to lift his shot against the post. Six minutes later City doubled their, Jack Batten heading home Frear’s corner kick. Any hopes Frome had of a second half comeback disappeared within two minutes of the restart as Frear made it 3-0 with a low shot from 15 yards. City were now in total control of the game and on 64 minutes Eddie Jones’ cross was neatly steered home by Cody Cooke. Frear and substitute Mo Touray both saw efforts hit the post before Cooke completed the scoring with seven minutes left, heading home another great Frear cross, and leave the Romans to look forward to Monday afternoon’s 4th Qualifying Round draw.
