Romans and Robins in pre-season stalemate
City continued their build up for the 2022-23 season with a 1-1 draw against Evesham United at The Spiers and Hartwell Stadium this afternoon. After a bright start from the home side, it was City who dominated the rest of the first half. Cody Cooke twice went close before Jordan Dyer and Tom Smith were denied by the Robins keeper to see the game reach half-time goalless. City continued to push the Pitching In Southern Division One South side back after the break and almost broke the deadlock on 54 minutes when only a great last ditch block deflected a shot by a trialist onto the bar. However, just past the hour mark Evesham took the lead. A poor pass by Luke Spokes allowed sub Briggs to fire into the net from 20 yards with his first touch of the ball. Within two minutes City levelled though, as Spokes redeemed himself with the pass that allowed Tom Smith to cross for the trialist to tap home. Despite the high temperatures the tempo of the game did not drop after this and the closing quarter was a more even affair. In fact, it was the Robins who came closest to grabbing a winner, the impressive Sidibe’s low shot hitting the post, and in the end both sides will have enjoyed another hard workout.
