Next Match – Weston Super Mare (H)
The second of two home games in five days in the NLS’s tight schedule sees City face local rivals Weston-super-Mare this Tuesday evening.
Weston are about to experience their first league game at Twerton Park since August 2018 as the Romans’ third league game of six in August marks an extremely compact calendar for a squad with low numbers, though boosted by the returns of Jack Batten and Jordan Dyer from suspension.
Both sides have made terrific starts to the campaign. City’s 3-0 win over Maidstone made it four points from six with only Truro scoring more goals than the Romans thus far. Weston have continued the momentum from last year’s Southern League South championship with two 1-0 wins against Havant & Waterlooville and Tonbridge Angels respectively. Marlon Jackson’s goal on 32 seconds against was the first scored in the division this season. He came off the bench at the weekend for Reuben Reid as the former Plymouth front man hobbled off in the first half, making him a doubt this Tuesday.
City have an outstanding historical record against the Seagulls, winning 41 of 56 meetings including 32 of 34 between 1911 and 2010. The last time they were in the same division, 2018/19, City carved out two 2-0 league wins, but Weston took some joy in the FA Cup as over 1000 fans at Woodspring Stadium saw them knock the Romans out of the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round that campaign.
Weston head into the game looking for their 50th goal against City. They’ll boast a few familiar faces in their side with Rex Mannings, Opi Edwards and James Morton signing from Jerry Gill’s side in the summer. In response, Dan Greenslade and Scott Wilson will be playing against their former clubs. Wilson scored in the match between the sides in March 2016 when his stoppage time opener appeared to give all three points to the visitors, but Tyler Harvey’s penalty and his winner from the halfway line went viral and ultimately paved the way for Bath City’s escape from relegation.
This fierce local derby will most likely produce similar drama; let’s hope it falls in the Romans’ favour.
