Next Match – Eastbourne Borough (A)
City travel to Eastbourne Borough this Saturday in one of their longest journeys of the league season.
The Sports finished just outside the play-off places in 8th last term. This time out, an opening day 1-0 win over Hampton & Richmond Borough was followed by a 1-1 draw at Farnborough thanks to substitute Stefan Vukoje netting his first for the club. Last Monday they lost 2-0 at newly promoted Aveley having made six changes to their starting XI. Remarkably after only three games, no outfield player has completed a full game for Boro this term.
For City, captain Kieran Parselle rallied the side to two impressive wins against the East Sussex outfit last campaign. With his only goal so far for the Romans, Parselle grabbed the late winner in the 4-3 triumph in our previous visit to Priory Lane. A 2-0 win in January, sealed by Dan Greenslade’s Goal of the Season, clinched a first double against the Sports.
Only two players from the game a year ago remain with Eastbourne. Following a transition to full-time in the summer, manager Danny Bloor moved on and was replaced by Mark Beard. The former Brighton & Hove Albion Academy coach, who worked under Graham Potter, was appointed by new owners who will be trying to steer Boro’ back to the National League. New arrivals include Billy Vigar, a loan signing from Arsenal who netted against Hampton, and Alex Finney, part of Ebbsfleet’s title-winning side last year.
Jerry Gill has overseen three wins, a draw, and a defeat in a decent record at Eastbourne. City have won four of the last five league meetings between the clubs.
Both sides have four points from three games so far and will be looking to bounce back from disappointing midweek results. It promises to be another thriller on the south coast!
