Late Wilson strike earns County Cup win
A late Scott Wilson goal was just enough to edge City past a spirited Nailsea & Tickenham side this evening and secure a place in the Somerset Premier Cup quarter-finals. The Western League Division 1 hosts, playing their first ever game in the competition, looked to be taking the game to a penalty shoot-out but on 83 minutes Tom Smith showed great endeavour to keep the ball in play and his cross was diverted into the net by Wilson. City survived an early goalmouth scramble following a corner but largely controlled a low-key first half, with Wilson, Rex Mannings and Tom Smith all going close for the Romans. City’s upped the tempo after the break but found their former keeper Jason Mellor in good form, denying Mannings and Luke Spokes, whilst Smith and Wilson saw further chances fly narrowly wide. However, City’s pressure finally told with seven minutes left, although the game also saw Kieran Parselle and James Morton limp off injured which will be a concern for manager Jerry Gill ahead of Saturday’s big FA Trophy tie at Bracknell Town.
