Late flurry sees City overcome Welton to reach County Cup quarters
Two goals in the final ten minutes saw City overcome Welton Rovers at West Clewes this evening to move into the quarters-finals of the Somerset Premier Cup. City fielded just three members of the first-team squad – Ryan Brunt, Tom Smith and 16-year old back-up keeper Harvey Wiles-Richards – with the rest of the side drafted in from their academy set-up plus triallist forward Corey King. This made for an even contest with the Western League Division 1 side and it was the hosts who struck first on 30 minutes, Coleman latching on to a long ball forward before shooting past Wiles-Richards. City levelled eight minutes later when Harry Barter got beyond the Welton backline and lifted a great shot over Drewitt. The second half continued in a similar pattern with both sides creating openings but it was City who edged ahead with ten minutes left, Brunt chipping a cross to the far post where Smith headed home. It took a great save from Wiles-Richards to deny the home side an equaliser in the final minute and moments later City made it 3-1 when Charlie Wiles-Richards cut in from the right to fire a shot across Drewitt into the corner of the net.
