Frear double leads way for 5-star City
City returned to winning ways this evening in emphatic style with a 5-1 thrashing of Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium. Elliott Frear led the way with two goals, whilst Scott Wilson, Jordan Thomas and Cody Cooke completed the scoring. The Terras scored probably the pick of the evening’s goals through Thompson’s long range effort but on a night to forgot they finished the game with 10 men and were fortunate not to be on the end of a bigger defeat.
From the opening kick-off City took full control of the game. Jordan Dyer headed a corner just over, Wilson was denied by keeper Thompson and Cooke had the ball in the net only for an offside flag to halt the celebration. All this was in the opening ten minutes but just six minutes later Dan Hayfield’s perfect pass set up Frear to fire City in front. Just past the half hour mark a cross by Thomas caused havoc in the Weymouth defence and Wilson turned the ball home for his 12th goal of the season. Five minutes later Thompson tried his luck from 25 yards and the ball hit the underside of the bar before bouncing into the net. However, within two minutes City restored their two-goal lead, Thomas cutting inside before unleashing a now trademark left-foot shot into the corner of the net.
The second half began with Will Buse producing a superb low save from a Goodship free-kick. City then appeared to be denied a clear penalty as Hayfield was bundled to the floor after rounding Thompson and about to roll the ball home. This injustice was forgotten on 60 minutes when Frear smashed home his second goal from a Wilson cross. The night got even worse for Weymouth on 77 minutes when Brooks received a second booking for a needless foul near the halfway line. And City deservedly made it 5-1 in the 90 minute as Chris Lines lifted the ball to the far post for Cooke to head home against his former club.
