Deserved point secured against title chasers

City secured another important point thanks to a goalless draw against high-flying Eastbourne Borough at Twerton Park this afternoon.

The visitors came into the game occupying second place in the table but it was City who started the brighter. Luke Russe’s 6th minute shot looked destined for the top corner before Gbadebo got his head in the way. Then Brad Ash charged down Wright’s clearance but the former City keeper recovered to grab the loose ball. Two extended stoppages for injuries halted City’s momentum and the game never really got going again for the rest of the half. The only real moment of note saw a 38th minute cross from Courtney trouble Harvey Wiles-Richards but he managed to divert the ball away at the second attempt.

Great control from Scott Wilson saw him create an opening on 54 minutes but his shot flashed just the wrong side of the post. Whilst Eastbourne looked short of attacking ideas for a title-chasing side they had the fall-back of dangerous long-throws and twice in quick succession around the hour-mark it took great defending from the Romans to keep them out. On 71 minutes Wright had to parry Mitch Beardmore’s shot and then block Ash’s follow-up. City had suffered late heartbreak in the reverse fixture but they came the closest to grabbing the win in the final minute. A swift break saw Elliott Frear’s perfect cross pick out fellow sub Jordan Alves. He elected to take it first time but Wright got down well to the shot and ensure the points were shared.
