City open cup defence with Robins win
City begun their defence of the Somerset Premier Cup this evening with a comfortable 3-1 win over Frome Town at Twerton Park. After a scoreless first half, goals from Scott Wilson, Ewan Clark and Cody Cooke set City on the way to a quarter-final place before a late consolation goal for the Robins.
Both sides enjoyed good spells during an even first half. The visitors best chance came on 31 minutes when debutant goalkeeper Slavomir Huk deflected former Roman James Ollis’ shot wide. City finished the half strongly though, keeper Roberts denying Oscar Thorn and Jordan Dyer in quick succession.
And City carried this momentum into the second half as just two minutes after the restart the ball broke to Wilson to fire home from the edge of the box. Clark miscued from close range a couple of minutes later before Thorn tested Roberts with a well-struck shot. City were now in full control of the game, Roberts producing several more good saves and Dan Hayfield firing over at the far post from a stunning Joe Raynes cross. However, the pressure finally told on 74 minutes when another great run and cross by Thorn was tapped home at the back stick by Clark. And on 80 minutes it was 3-0 when Raynes crossed for Cooke to head past Roberts. Frome grabbed a deserved consolation goal through Simpson’s neat finish on 88 minutes but it was too little too late to deny the Romans.
