City lose their way late on in the Wood
City failed to build on their midweek win over Salisbury this afternoon, going down 2-1 to Boreham Wood at Twerton Park. Jordan Alves’ free-kick had cancelled out an early goal for the Wood but they struck in the first minute of stoppage time to secure the win.
The play-off chasing visitors opening the scoring after just nine minutes as Appiah got free at a corner to head past Harvey Wiles-Richards. City struggled to hold the ball during these opening exchanges but began to get into the game as the half progressed. Luke Russe saw a looping shot bounce just wide on 22 minutes then Ben Seymour’s neat turn in the box five minutes later ended with Ashmore getting down well to his low shot. However, he was beaten just past the half hour mark when Alves’ 20-yard free-kick found the corner of the net. Despite half-chances at both ends after the that was the end of the scoring during the opening 45 minutes.
The second half saw Boreham Wood regain control of the game but they struggled to fashion any clear openings. Wiles-Richards claiming a Benton cross ahead of Ndlovu and Appiah directing a header wide, the only worrying moments for the Romans. Their best chance came with seven minutes left when the referee inadvertently prevented sub Latrell Humphrey-Ewers from clearing the ball allowing Whelan a chance that Wiles-Richards did well to turn over the bar. However, the Wood were not to be denied and just past the 90 minute mark Appiah struck from close range to take the points back to Hertfordshire.
