City can’t roll Stones over in goalless Twerton Park stalemate
League leaders Wealdstone held City to a goalless draw at Twerton Park this afternoon. Although the clash was never less than competitive, clear cut chances were at a premium and as the game reached the final half hour it was clear the visitors were content with a point from their trip West. Even during the first half, when they shaded possession if not efforts on goal, the Stones looked to slow the game down whenever possible to prevent City building any real pressure. This largely restricted City to long range shots and one such chance saw Noah Chilver’s effort clip the frame of the goal but this was as close as City came during the opening 45 minutes. City’s only nervous moment defensively came just before the interval when Mendy’s snap-shot almost caught out Ryan Clarke but he manage to block the ball with his body. Wealdstone began the second half with slightly more attacking intent but after ex-City defender Efete’s cross-shot hit the outside of the post they retreated back into their shell. Ryan Brunt and Adam Mann shot tamely straight at Isted before the latter hooked a volley narrowly over the goal. Even the introduction of Ross Stearn and Louis Britton couldn’t see City find a way through the resolute blue-shirted defence and the match largely drifted to the conclusion so desired by the Stones.
