Bumper Bank Holiday crowd sees City on top in Somerset derby
Second half goals from Sean Rigg and Joe Raynes saw City deservedly overcome Somerset rivals Weston Super Mare at Twerton Park this afternoon. They could even to miss yet another penalty in a dominant performance from the home side. From the opening whistle City pushed forward with the Seagulls struggling to cope with their pace and movement. However, too often the final pass or cross was lacking and as the half progressed Weston tactic of slowing the game down and looking to win free-kicks in the City half began to pay off. And from one set-piece they were desperately unlucky not to take the lead when a close range header hit the inside of the post with ex-City striker Lucas somehow failing to turn the rebound in. Within a few minutes of the restart City should have taken the lead. A long-throw from Raynes saw Nurse barge into the the back of Ryan Brunt and the referee pointed to the spot. Rigg stepped up but Purnell dived to his right to keep the spot kick out. The disappointment only lasted nine minutes though as Adam Mann’s cross was headed home by an unmarked Rigg. And within six minutes City doubled their lead, Rigg’s shot taking a slight deflection of Raynes to beat Purnell’s despairing dive. Brunt then saw his shot hit the outside of the post and Purnell did well to block a late John Mills shot as City controlled the remainder of the game to the obvious delight of the vast majority of the 1000+ crowd.
