Raynes and Frear on target in Boro win

Goals from Joe Raynes and Elliott Frear saw City beat Farnborough 2-0 at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium this afternoon, to continue their excellent late season run of form.

The game came to life just past the quarter of an hour mark after a cagey opening. Alex Fisher’s header from a Mitch Beardmore corner was parried into the air by keeper Turner and appeared to have dropped behind the goalline. However, the hosts lucky escape only lasted a couple of seconds as Fisher’s follow-up was deflected against the bar and Raynes turned in the rebound for his first goal of the season. City largely controlled the game after this without creating any further clear openings and three minutes before the interval it took a great save by Harvey Wiles-Richards to deny MacArthur after he broke clear.

Farnborough came out with renewed purpose after the half-time break but struggled to turn their possession into chances. Their best opening saw Holmes blaze a 65th minute shot over the bar from a promising position. Three minutes later they won an indirect free-kick on the corner of the six yard box after Wiles-Richards was adjudged to picked up a back-pass but the keeper blocked Holmes’ shot. Then with nine minutes left City secured the deserved win when substitute Jesse Nwabueze capped a entertaining cameo performance by crossing for Frear to send a low shot into the net via the post.
