Fisher and Ash strike to silence Slough
Goals from Alex Fisher and Brad Ash saw City beat Slough Town 2-0 at Twerton Park this evening. Fisher struck on 17 minutes before Ash secured the points eleven minutes from time, to move the Romans above the Rebels and 12 points clear of the bottom four.
City began the game on the front foot and this positive approach paid off in the 17th minute. Keeper Horlock did well to twice deny Scott Wilson but it was third time lucky as Fisher lashed the ball home from eight yards. Slough almost responded immediately as a long-throw wasn’t dealt with, but Harvey Wiles-Richards kept Ogbonna’s shot out. This was a rare moment of concern at the back for City as they looked to build on their advantage. However, they couldn’t turn this control into further clear chances and it was the visitors who finished the half stronger, Gilbert curling their best chance narrowly wide five minutes before the break.
And they carried this momentum into the second half. Wiles-Richards had to be at his best to turn Gilbert’s 50th minute shot over the bar, with the resultant corner scrambled away via the foot of the post. City were struggling to retain possession and Spasov somehow failed to level from close range on 65 minutes, Wiles-Richards gratefully grabbing the ball on the line. Just when it looked as if it would be a tense final ten minutes for City they struck again. Fisher and Jordan Alves combined for the latter to fire in a shot that Horlock could only parry and Ash slide the loose ball home. This took the fight out of the Rebels and City saw out the remaining time with consummate ease to make it a great night under the Twerton Park lights.
