Sweeten shines for England Colleges
In the early hours of 2 March City midfielder Louis Sweeten set off to catch a flight to Rome, Italy, to represent England Colleges as part of a 20-man squad in the ROMA CAPUT MUNDI Tournament. The Tournament was split into 2 Groups of 4. England, San Marino, Canada and USA. The second group was made up of Wales, Greece, Toronto and Italy. The top 2 teams in each group would meet in the final on Friday.
On Monday, England Colleges played San Marino National team and beat them 2-0. Louis started the game and made a positive contribution towards the team result.
On Tuesday the fixtures continued As England Colleges took on Canada. England won 4-0 with Louis getting himself on the score sheet and also claiming the Man of the Match award.
Wednesday allowed for some down time and an opportunity to take in the city of Rome. Visiting the coliseum and the Trevi Fountian.
Thursday meant the final league game of the competition. This was played against USA who ran out 3-2 winners. Despite the loss England still made the final to be played on Friday Vs Italy.
Louis opened the scoring in the final to put England 1-0 up. However Italy came back strong to win the game 2-1.
After the final, Louis and the players flew home, returning in time for him to make the bench against Weston Super Mare for the first team on Saturday.
When asked what Louis’ thoughts were on representing his country, he replied; “This was an unbelieve experience, where I was able to test myself against players from all over the world. I felt like I performed well across the week and gave a positive account of myself. I learnt so much from this experience and enjoyed the week very much.”
