Bath City Women 1st (1) 3 Downend Flyers (1) 1 – Sunday 10 November 2024 – Regen Arable SW Regional WFL Div 1N – Twerton Park
Match Report by Jane Jones.
A second half brace from Maddy Brown ensured Bath City Women took all three points at Twerton Park against bottom of the table Downend Flyers.
Despite their league position, the opposition started strongly but City managed to soak up the early pressure before Ashley Harris put the Romans ahead with her first goal for the club.
Brown stormed down the left-hand side and found Koren Thorner-Atkinson on the edge of the box, she selflessly passed to Harris who beat Aimee Glover in goal with a lofted strike into the top right corner.
However, the lead didn’t last long as Downend levelled after City keeper Farley failed to deal with an awkward bounce from a long-range free kick taken by Grace Smith.
Despite continued pressure, City couldn’t break through again, and started the second half with a lot more energy and intensity and had several good chances before regaining the lead.
Captain Tara Taylor made one of her trademark lung-busting runs down the right before launching a dangerous ball into the box.
Glover fumbled the save and Brown was on hand to bundle the ball into the back of the net.
Moments later, Glover was called into action again, this time saving a long range shot from Bex Fry but she wasn’t able to stop Brown scoring her second and City’s third after the former Warminster player latched onto a great cross from Erin Watkins.
City continued to press to extend their lead and had several narrow misses, but they had more than enough to confirm a second successive win, moving them up to fifth.
