Derby clash goes to form with Weston win

The Somerset Derby went to form at Twerton Park this afternoon as Weston Super Mare ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over the Romans. A goal in first half stoppage time from Pearson set the Seagulls on their way before a Jerry Lawrence own goal early in the second half secured the points.

Despite coming into the game at opposite ends of the table there was little to choose between the sides during the first half. Neither keeper was unduly troubled in the opening 45 minutes, with Jack Batten directing a header narrowly wide from a 9th minute corner the closest City would come. It took a great block from Micah Anthony to deny Chamberlain five minutes before the interval. However, just when it looked like the game would reach half-time goalless Coulson slipped the ball through to Pearson and the ex-City forward made no mistake from 12 yards.

And it got worse for City within six minutes of the restart when Coulson’s free-kick was diverted into his own net by Lawrence from inside the six-yard box. City looked to respond with Anthony’s acrobatic effort on 59 minutes flying narrowly wide before Josh Phillips’ well-struck shot ten minutes later testing another former Roman Harris in the Weston goal. These half chances were as good as it got for City, though, with only a good block by Jack Batten denying Reid and Harvey Wiles-Richards standing up well to keep out Dodds shot, preventing the visitors extending their lead.
