City and Terras in Twerton Park stalemate

City and Weymouth shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Twerton Park this evening. Alex Fisher gave City the lead early in the second half before the visitors – who were reduced to 10 men late in the game – levelled through Ward 15 minutes from time.

The sides came into the game as the league’s lowest scorers – with just 13 goals between them – but the opening 20 minutes saw chances at both ends. Bartolo could only send a tame 2nd minute header into the hands of Harvey Wiles-Richards before Fisher’s hooked shot on 15 minutes was comfortably claimed by ex-City keeper Buse. Three minutes later he was tested again by Nick Grimes header. The best chance fell to the Terras on 21 minutes when Ward saw his shot come back off the post. After this lively start the game became more scrappy, with only a flurry of bookings and a failed attempt at a spectacular overhead kick by Bartolo, entertaining another excellent midweek Twerton Park crowd.

However, this all changed within four minutes of the restart as Thompson failed to clear Grimes’ cross allowing Fisher to steer the ball home from six yards. Grimes almost got on the scoresheet himself seven minutes later but his free-kick was well held by Buse. Weymouth equalised in the 75th minute when Wiles-Richards could only parry a swerving shot into the path of Ward for a simple finish. The goalscorer failed to see out the full game as his attempt to win a penalty with five minutes left saw him earn a second caution. City couldn’t take advantage of the extra man though and had to settle for a second draw in the last three days.
