Wellington Ladies (0) 0 Bath City Women (0) 2 – Sunday 16 April 2023 – Somerset County WFL Division 1 – Wellington Playing Field
Match Report by Mark Stillman.
Two second half goals from Tara Taylor sealed second spot for Bath City Women. The captain led by example, netting twice in the second half to see off bottom side Wellington. Home keeper Hannah Worth had kept the Romans at bay with a string of saves. But Taylor’s persistence eventually paid off in a one-sided contest to round off City’s season.
The Romans were on the front foot from the off with Chelsea Giles’ thunderbolt superbly tipped over by Worth on 19 minutes. The home stopper prevented Taylor twice before the break at her near post and was grateful to see Ashanti Golding’s lob drift narrowly wide.
City continued in the same vein in the second half shooting up the slope and they finally broke through on 64 minutes. Mils Bellotti’s ball from the back was latched on by Taylor who cut inside from the right and fired low past Worth from 10 yards. Wellington lost captain Maisie Barrow to injury and switched to 3-4-3 to search for a way back but seldom troubled Sadie Farley in goal. City took advantage of the hosts’ all-out attack with a clincher near the end. Taylor capitalised on a mistake on halfway by Maddie Davey and burst clear before calmly rounding Worth and nudging home much to the relief of the away travelling support.
Matt Abreu’s team will now have to wait for confirmation if their application for promotion has been accepted following a fine maiden campaign.
