Angels descend for smash and grab win

City were on the wrong end of a perfect smash and grab performance from Tonbridge Angels at Twerton Park this afternoon. The visitors had spent the majority of the game with ten men behind the ball, looking to catch City on the break with long balls forward. And this tactic paid off perfectly two minutes from time when Wood fired across Max Harris into the corner of the net to secure the three points. It made for an attritional game, with City dominating possession but struggling to create clear cut openings. The closest they came in the first half saw a 25-yard Tom Smith shot turned around the post at full stretch by Bentley. At the other end Jack Batten had to twice be alert to deny Tonbridge an opening goal. Just past the hour mark City were desperately unlucky not to finally break the deadlock when Bentley could only weakly punch an Elliott Frear cross to Dan Hayfield but he saw his shot crash against the post. This turned out to be as close as City would come despite several further half chances in and around the Tonbridge box. Just when it looked like City would have to settle for a point, substitute Wood found just enough space near the right edge of the box to make it an even more frustrating afternoon the Romans.
