Frear stuns Dulwich with last gasp winner

A last gasp goal by Elliott Frear saw City bag a second successive away league win this afternoon against Dulwich Hamlet at Champion Hill. The game looked to be heading for a draw as Scott Wilson’s first half stoppage time strike had been cancelled out by Raymond’s penalty four minutes into the second half. This would probably have been a fair result but into the fourth minute of additional time Frear put one final cross into the box and to the delight of the sizable Roman contingent in the 3000+ crowd it flew over keeper Holden into the top corner of the net to secure the victory. In an even first half, City’s best openings saw Wilson steer a volley just over the bar and Dan Hayfield fire a shot into the side-netting, whilst the hosts fashioned several good chances but failed to test Max Harris. However, in the final action of the half Wilson stole possession from Cheadle to race clear and slot the ball past Holden. Dulwich were back on level terms on 49 minutes when Mills went down in the box under pressure from Jack Batten and Raymond sent Harris the wrong way from the spot. There was still little to choose between the sides, although Dulwich were enjoying the greater share of the ball. City’s defence largely kept them at bay although twice Harris was tested from free-kicks, the second time producing a great stop to keep out Cheadle’s well-placed effort. City’s biggest threat going forward had been Frear’s crosses and in the end this proved decisive, although perhaps not quite in the intended way.
