Red-hot City in stunning Sports comeback
A 95th minute Kieran Parselle header completed a stunning comeback win for City at Eastbourne Borough this afternoon. Trailing 3-1 at the interval they struck three times without reply in the second half to secure their first win of the fledgling 2022-23 season. The sides exchanged own goals in the opening ten minutes. City failing to deal with a header back across goal from a 6th minute corner, the ball just crossing the line from a City player’s last touch, before four minutes later a Cody Cooke cross was diverted into his own net by a Borough defender. City were now looking the better side but two goals in eight minutes put the hosts firmly in control of the contest. In the 22nd minute the usual tussling at a corner saw the referee award a penalty kick that Hammond confidently dispatched, then on the half hour mark an unmarked Whelpdale headed past Joe Wright to make it 3-1. City were gifted a way back into the game six minutes into the second half when Sports keeper Worgan misjudged a hanging cross leading to Jordan Dyer heading home. And eleven minutes later the scores were level as Joe Raynes was tripped in the box to allow Cooke to send Worgan the wrong way from the penalty spot. Despite the extreme heat on the South coast both sides looked for a winner in the closing stages of the game and in the fifth minute of stoppage time Parselle headed home Raynes’ long throw to spark jubilant scenes amongst the Romans players, staff and fans.
