Mini-Revival halted by in-form Eastbourne

City’s mini-revival came to an end this afternoon with a 2-0 defeat against in-form Eastbourne Borough at Priory Lane. On the back of a four-game unbeaten run City started the game on the front foot, winning a series of corners that the play-off chasing hosts struggled to deal with, and seeing a well-struck Tom Smith effort force a smart stop from keeper Worgan. However, they were made to pay for failing to turn this pressure into goals when Eastbourne scored from their first sight of goal on 24 minutes, Kendall finishing neatly from Elliott’s through ball. This turned out to be a blow City from which never really recovered. They reached the interval with just the goal separating the sides but within four minutes of the restart Borough struck again, Perez latching onto Luer’s pass before firing low past Ryan Clarke. With a two-goal lead Eastbourne were content to see the game out after this, although Dave Sims-Burgess’ 72nd minute header, that was tipped over by Worgan, could have changed the pattern of its closing stages. In the end only the post prevented Kendall netting a third goal in stoppage time, leaving the Romans to reflect on a disappointing afternoon on the long journey back to the West Country.
