Frome Town Match Preview
City will be aiming to extend their three match unbeaten run on Tuesday when they travel to Frome Town in the semi final of the Somerset Senior Cup.
This will be the second competitive match between the close neighbours this season, City winning the FA Cup 3rd Qualifying tie at Twerton Park back in October with an emphatic 5-0 victory.
But while they have struggled since then The Robins have maintained a top two position in the Southern League South division, presently lying two points above Cirencester Town.
They are unbeaten in their last six outings and have won eleven of their fifteen league matches at Badgers Hill.
And any City supporters thinking this will be a stroll into the final should note that Frome have dispatched two higher level opponents this season: Poole in the Trophy and, most impressively, the powerful Oxford City in the Cup.
There could well be several former City players in the home team’s line up.
George Rigg made 73 appearances over two seasons before joining Chippenham Town in 2018.
He moved to Frome last summer to team up with Jon Davies, who made 13 appearances in the stripes a few seasons back, and two products of the City Academy in James Ollis and Martin Lenihan.
And more recently they have been joined by Callum Evans who made six appearances in 2020.
Surprisingly this will be only the third time we have travelled to Frome in the Somerset Cup, a Peter Rogers goal securing a draw in 1974 while Dave Gilroy’s in 2008 was only a consolation in a 3-1 defeat.
To get to this stage City have knocked out Clevedon, Portishead and Welton while Bishops Lydeard and Weston super Mare have been eliminated by The Robins.
We have to go back to 2008 for the last time we won at this stage of the competition with victory at Yeovil Town, who play in the other semi final on 5 April against Odd Down.
Tickets for the match can be purchased in advance from the Frome website.
