
Goalkeeper – Glyn Garner (1) Former Welsh international Glyn began in the Welsh Premier League with Cwmbran and subsequently Llanelli before moving across the border to Bury in 2000. He made 126 appearances for the Shakers and a further 131 in the football league with Leyton Orient and Shrewsbury. Then after a stint with Grays he signed for boyhood club Newport County. Although he failed to make the first team and signed for City in 2011 for first team opportunities.
Goalkeeper – Jason Matthews (17) Paulton born Matthews was on Bristol Rovers books as a schoolboy, but was released and circled the lower leagues with Welton Rovers, Paulton, Mangotsfield and Salisbury before getting a break with Nuneaton and subsequently , football league club, Exeter. But after 14 appearances for the Grecians he was released. He then had spells at Aberystwyth and Clevedon before a lengthy stint at Weymouth where he scored his only career goal from his penalty area. But was released and signed by Eastleigh where he spent 3 seasons, playing against City, in Conference South. But left due to Eastleigh’s Full Time ambitions, and was signed by City in June 2011.
Defender/Midfield – Sekani Simpson (2) Sekani started his career, like many others, at Bristol City as a trainee. During his time with the Robins he was sent out on loan to Forest Green & Tamworth. After being released in 2005 he signed for Forest Green permanently for a season before moving to Weston-Super-Mare. After that he signed for City in October 2006 and has been a key member of the squads that have won promotion from the Southern League and Conference South.
Defender– Jim Rollo (4) Jim started his career as a Walsall apprentice before moving to Welsh side Cardiff city making 14 appearances. In 1997 he joined City for the first time on loan, and later that season joined Ebbw Vale on loan. After being released by Cardiff he signed for Forest Green, by whom he was again sent back on loan for City for a second time. Then after appearing for Clevedon and Merthyr Tydfil signed permanently for City in 2002 and has become an ever-present in City defence since.
Defender – Gethin Jones (5) Gethin started out his football career with Cardiff City making 3 appearances for the bluebirds. However in failing to make an impression on the first team he dropped down into non-league football with Merthyr Tydfil. After 2 successful seasons with Merthyr he followed managerial team John Relish & Adie Britton to City in 2005, where he won the Southern league and 3 seasons on the play-off final.
Defender – Danny Webb (14) Son of Chelsea legend David, Danny started his career with Southampton as a striker before being released by the Saints. He then went on to represent 13 different clubs including Southend, Hull, Cambridge united, Yeovil, Rushden & Diamonds & AFC Wimbledon. Once he signed for Salisbury in 2008 he was converted into a centre back making 49 appearances for the lilywhite before signing for City in 2010. He had his first season at City shortend due to a nasty facial injury meaning he missed the latter end of the season.
Defender – Mark Preece (15) Mark is another product of the Bristol Rovers youth academy, after signing a pro deal with the Pirates he was shipped out on loan to Gloucester making 15 appearances and scoring once. He was released by Bristol Rovers, however, and found a home at Forest Green for 4 seasons totalling 135 games including 7 goals (one of which knocked City out of the FA Cup in 2009). He then signed a one year deal with Mansfield but was sent on loan to Eastwood and AFC Telford after failing to make an impression. He then signed for City after impressing on trial in August 2011.
Defender/Midfielder – Joe Burnell (19) Joe, like many others in the City squad, started his career at Bristol City and became a stalwart in their side for 5 seasons. He was then released and had spells at Wycombe and Northampton before getting his first taste of Non-league football with Oxford. After a successful campaign he was snapped up by Exeter but found first team opportunities limited so was released by the Grecians before being signed by City in July 2010. He unfortunately began with a groin injury that kept him out of the first few months but quickly established himself as a key player in the team.
Defender/Midfielder – Paul Stonehouse (3) A graduate of the Forest Green academy signed a professional contract for the Rovers in 2005 and went on to become the youngest player to make 100 Blue Square Premier starts totalling 177 appearances and 7 goals including one against Derby in the FA Cup. He left for Mansfield after Forest Green finished in the relegation zone in 2010 and had a solid spell with the Stags but was still let go and snapped up my City before the 2011/12 season.
Defender – Danny Rosser (-) One of the first graduates of the Bath City academy had impressed Billy Clark with solid performances at the back so much that he earned non-contract terms with City in March 2011 and called up to England Colleges team, along with Danny Collins, later on that season. He joined City for pre-season training ahead of the 2011/12 season.
Midfielder – Scott Murray (7) Scott started out in Scottish non-league with Fraserburgh impressing in over 100 appearances for the club which alerted scouts at many Premier League Clubs and Scott eventually signed for Aston Villa in 1994. However it failed to work out at Villa so he moved to Bristol City in 1997. He quickly became a fans favourite at Ashton Gate making a staggering 354 appearances for the Robins in his two spells, separated by a stint with Reading. After a brief loan spell with Cheltenham Town he moved to Yeovil but was released after a season before being signed by City in 2010. He showed his class by scoring 7 goals that season.
Midfielder – Adam Connolly (8) Adam started his career with Cheltenham making his way through the ranks onto the first team bench but never really progressed any further despite making a handful of impressive appearances. After being released by the robins he made 2 appearances for Hednesford Town after impressing on trial. He then joined City in 2008 on non-contract terms and has been the midfield maestro as proved by his joint player of the season in 2010 during the promotion season and carried over his form to once again impress in the black and white stripes.
Midfielder – Lewis Hogg (11) A product of the Bristol Rovers youth system eventually took the chance to get into the first team whilst becoming captain for a short while during his 74 appearance stay with the Pirates. Surprisingly, he was then released and moved to Barnet where he appeared for England C. However Lewis was on the move again to Weston-Super-Mare for a two and half year spell before signing for City in 2006 via a tribunal. He has been an ever present in the side since including joint player of the season in 2010. However injury hampered his playing time in City first season back in the conference limited to substitute appearances in the final few games.
Midfielder – Marc Canham (16) Marc started his footballing career at Colchester United where he made 4 appearances for the U’s before moving to Bournemouth but unfortunately failed to make an appearance for the Cherries. He then moved to City’s tenants Team Bath for 5 years ,facing City several times. Team Bath dropped out of the league 2009 but Marc moved on to Hayes & Yeading where he enjoyed 34 appearances but when it was announced he would be released at the end of the season, City were quick to snap him up in July 2010.
Midfielder – Marley Watkins (18) Talented winger who joined Swansea’s youth system before being released by the Swans in 2007. He signed for Cheltenham in 2007 where he made 25 appearances scoring the one goal. Due to limited opportunities he originally joined City on loan early in the 2010/11 season. He signed permanently for City in January 2011. And continued his good form in the latter stages of the season bagging 3 goals.
Midfielder – Danny Collins (-) The second of the two academy graduates who made the step up by signing non-contract erms with City after impressing in the heart of the academy midfield. He also, along with Danny Rosser, earned a call up to England Colleges that same season and was subsequently invited to pre-season training at the beginning of the 2011/12 season.
Midfielder – Alex Russell (21) Born in Crosby, Alex started his career with Burscough before becoming somewhat of a journeyman playing for a whopping 11 clubs in 17 years. Most notably playing with current team mates Scott Murray and Joe Burnell and Bristol City over 3 seasons. He originally signed for Bath City early in the 2010/11 season, making a sizeable impression in the conference. However he ended up leaving for Yeovil in January due to his success. But after finding first team football hard to come by at the Glovers he rejoined City in the close season.
Midfielder/Forward – Josh Egan (20) Josh played his youth football at Cheltenham Town before he was released following a re-structuring in March 2011. He was signed by Bath City on the same day and made one appearance for the Romans before the close of the season. He was then signed by Blackpool, then of the Premier League, in early May with the expectation that Josh would become part of their new Under-21 development squad. When that squad failed to materialise he was re-signed by City in August 2011 as the first beneficiary of the new Dave Palmer Memorial Fund set up by former City player Dave Palmer’s employers Lanes Health.
Forward – Lee Phillips (10) Former Rugby Union talent Lee started out his career with a round ball as a trainee with Plymouth Argyle where he turned professional in 1996 and going on to make 50 appearances for the Pilgrims. After a horrific leg break he resumed his career in the non-league circuit with Weymouth and Newport County before having a memorable spell with Exeter where he played in a Wembley play-off final for the Grecians. Then due to the arrival of Paul Tisdale and his rotation system he ended up joining Torquay and subsequently Rushden & Diamonds, Weymouth and Cambridge before signing for City in July 2010 where his goals have firmly established him as a fans favourite among the Twerton faithful.
Forward – Jamie Cook (9) Oxford born Jamie signed for his hometown club in 1997 and made 77 appearances in a 4 year spell with the U’s. He joined the conference winning Boston United team and Stevenage before coming to Twerton Park for the first time on loan from the latter. He then showed what he could do in front of goal for Whitney United scoring 25 times in 37 appearances earning a move to Rushden & Diamonds. He then had two spells at Crawley Town, split by a second stint with Oxford, where he made a substitute appearance at Old Trafford during the FA Cup run. He was released and signed permanently by City in May 2011.
Forward – Sean Canham (27) On loan from Hereford United, Sean has spent much of his career at Twerton Park when he played for Bath City tenants Team Bath FC. He was signed by Notts County in 2008, and moved to Hereford in 2010. He joined the Romans on emergency loan in September for two months, and has now returned for the rest of the season. Valued for his strength, speed, and scoring ability. Although a former team-mate of City midfielder Marc Canham, the two Canhams are not related.
