Late Keary header sees City edge out Rovers in latest pre-season outing (19/7/14)

A Pat Keary header eight minutes from time secured City a 1-0 win over Bristol Rovers in their latest pre-season outing at Twerton Park this afternoon. Trialist Keary - who was released by the Pirates at the end of last season - rose to head home Ross Stearn's inswinging corner and decide the evenly matched contest. The visitors - facing a first season as a non-league club since 1920 - fielded a mixture of first-team, youth and trialists as they look to bounce back to the Football League at the first attempt. Clear cut openings were at a premium during the first half, Andy Watkins forcing a fine stop from teenage keeper Preston then shooting narrowly wide, whilst Gosling twice fired free-kicks straight at Jason Mellor for the Pirates. The half ended with Preston producing another good save, this time from Stearn, then Rovers' Ward-Baptiste somehow heading wide from just a few feet out. City suffered a injury worry when striker Chas Hemmings limped off midway through the half then early in the second period keeper Mellor fell heavily on his right shoulder but after treatment could continue between the posts. City were beginning to gain the upper hand, Dave Pratt testing Preston again and Stearn dragging a shot wide. In-between Mellor denied Lucas with his legs but the Romans were looking more likely to break the deadlock. Dan Ball and Stearn, twice, saw chances come and go before Keary finally beat Preston. Stearn could have added to the scoring after this but City will have been pleased with another good workout and a morale-boosting victory.

Late penalty condemns City to first pre-season defeat (15/7/14)

A penalty eight minutes from time saw City suffer their first defeat of pre-season against a Swansea City U21 side at Twerton Park this evening. The spot kick - calmly converted by Hedges - was awarded following a challenge by Pat Keary to complete an impressive comeback from the visitors after City had led at the interval. City had been pushed back in the opening stages, with keeper Sam Butler alert to a couple of threatening balls forward. So, it was somewhat against the run of play on 24 minutes Andy Watkins got behind the Swans defence to lift the ball over Zabret. The game was largely scrappy after this but just past the hour mark a well-struck shot from Fallon levelled the scores. Neither side could gain any momentum after this with the usual regular substitutions but just when the game looked to be heading for a draw the referee intervened to allow the Welsh side to secure the victory.

Evans back to deny Bluebirds as City impress in opening home friendly (12/7/14)

City enjoyed an excellent workout at a warm and sunny Twerton Park this afternoon, holding Championship side Cardiff City to a 1-1 draw. City were understandably forced to defend for long periods - particularly during the first half - but also showed flashes of attacking threat that bodes well for the forthcoming season. Jason Mellor dealt well with several efforts from the Welsh side although he was beaten by Macheda midway through the half only for the rising shot to strike the top of the crossbar. The was as close at the Bluebirds would come during the first period and City finished the half well, Andy Watkins nearly lifting the ball over keeper Moore and Dave Pratt heading narrowly over. Cardiff changed all ten outfield players at the interval and continued to fashion a number of openings before the deadlock was finally broken on 66 minutes when Berger's low shot beat Mellor. Despite regular changes for City they increasingly looked threatening on the attack and, with eleven minutes left, Chas Hemmings outmuscled a defender near the goalline to pull the ball back to Jordan Ricketts and his cross was fired into the roof of the net by ex-Cardiff trainee Zak Evans. Both sides had chances to win the game after this but neither could find the net, City's best chance following further good work from Hemmings which set up Ricketts for a low shot that was comfortably saved by Moore.

City open pre-season campaign with Larkhall victory (10/7/14)

City began their preparations for the 2014-15 season with a 2-0 victory at Southern League newcomers Larkhall Atheltic this evening. They began the match with a youthful line-up but went ahead after just four minutes when the home keeper failed to deal with a back-pass allowing Jordan Ricketts to walk the ball into the net. The Western League champions responded well, twice forcing former Bristol Rovers youth keeper Sam Butler into fine stops. Ryan Mitchell also headed two efforts off the line but midway through the half the hosts had a great chance to level when triallist Pat Keary was adjudged to have handled in the box. However, Butler once again came to City's rescue, saving the resultant spot-kick. City ended the half strongly, with Ricketts and new signing Frankie Artus striking the frame of the goal and the former also being denied when clean through on goal. As usual in pre-season matches the second half was regularly disrupted by substitutions and the only addition to the scoring came on 70 minutes when Dave Pratt's low shot found the corner of the net via a slight deflection off a Larks defender. City are next in action on Saturday when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer brings his Cardiff City side to Twerton Park (ko 2pm).
